What Is The Importance Of Patient And Family Education In Nursing?
Patient and family education is an important part of a nurse’s job.
Patient education gives a person the information they need to participate in their healthcare, which improves health outcomes. Educating a patient’s family is an extension of the same principle. Patients need a support system to thrive and it’s better for that support system to have an accurate understanding of a patient’s condition.
For people who are already struggling with health issues, patient and family education can help patients speed their recovery and reduce the likelihood of complications by educating them on self-care steps, the reasons why those steps are important, how to recognize the warning signs, and what to do if a problem occurs. Having this information can help reduce complications, create opportunities for early intervention when complications occur, and reduce the likelihood of being readmitted to a hospital.
Patient education can also play a preventative role by helping individuals avoid developing chronic medical conditions like diabetes or heart disease.
Who Can Help Provide Patient and Family Education?
While physicians can and do provide patient education, most of those conversations happen between patients, families, and nurses. As the most frequent point of contact with a patient, it’s natural that nurses will get more direct questions and opportunities to teach.
What Is The Importance of Patient and Family Education to Perioperative Nursing?
Patient and family education is particularly important if you’re a perioperative nurse. Surgical patients need information so that they’re properly prepared for their procedure, know what to expect in the days after their surgery, and understand their pain management options.
Research has shown that good perioperative patient education results in more realistic patient expectations and contributes to high patient satisfaction scores. More importantly, it improves patient outcomes by reducing anxiety, improving pain control, and providing the patient with skills to reduce post-operative complications. It also tends to reduce the length of a patient’s hospital stay, which is an economic benefit.

Course Introduction
The Joint Commission (JC) developed a new Safe Care program to provide patient education at beside and while receiving care. This program makes important safety information available to patients and their families 24/7 through the use of videos that patients can access on their smart phones or through texting.
One of the reasons the JC developed the Safe Care program was to encourage more patients and their families to become more involved in their own health care. By encouraging this, the JC hopes to stop bad outcomes such as medication mis-up or health care-associated infections.
This course will provide an overview of the JC Safe Care program and discuss how patients and caregivers can join with medical professionals to ensure safe and effective outcomes.
