OSHA is responsible for ensuring "safe and healthful" working conditions for those in healthcare.

This is far from being a comprehensive list. OSHA's General Duty Clause means that employers must address any reasonably foreseeable hazards their workers face, even if there's no specific regulation.

In OSHA standards that require training, there's often a prescribed refresher frequency. There are typically also specific events that trigger retraining, like a change in assignment, a change in equipment or protocols, and a demonstrated inadequacy in the employee's safety knowledge.

For many standards, the mandatory frequency is "at least annually." OSHA's annual training requirements for healthcare workers include respiratory protection, bloodborne pathogens, and most hazardous substance standards.

When frequency isn't specified, OSHA leaves it up to the employer's judgment. However, most employers choose to do annual refreshers in these cases to ensure that the rules stay fresh on everyone's minds.
